Press release: Decline in Canadian lumber export to China

China has lately reduced the import of softwood lumber from Canada and at the same time increased the import from Russia. Just a year ago China imported approximately the same volume of softwood lumber from Canada as from Russia.

"The Chinese import of softwood lumber from Canada decreased by 34% in September compared to last year. The import from Russia increased by 22%," says Jenny Wessung, CEO Woodstat AB. "If we look at the import so far this year, China decreased the import from Canada by 13% during January to September and the import from Russia increased by 14%."

The Canadian market share in the Chinese lumber market decreases further. The latest figures show that only about 30% of the total Chinese import of softwood lumber now comes from Canada. That figure was approximately 40% a year ago and almost 50% in early 2012.
