The falling Ruble has taken Russian exports of wood products to record high levels. This is most clearly seen in China, where Russia now accounts for half of the country's total import of softwood lumber. During January and February 2015 Russia exported one million cubic meter of sawn lumber to China, which is 20 percent more than during the same period in 2014. At the same time China decreased the import from Canada by 27 percent.
“The falling Ruble helps Russia to compete with other countries; especially Canada has lost market shares to Russia. Thus Canadian lumber remains in North America more than before,” says Jenny Wessung, CEO Woodstat AB.
